18.Reaching World’s End
|
There are number of motorable roads reaching Horton Plains, end of which is the World’s End, commencing from Pattipola, Ohiya, Haputale, Belihul Oya and some other areas, meeting all at one junction closer to Far Inn Restaurant.
I have visited World’s End through most of these roads but my favourite is the one, once I walked with Neeta all the way commencing from Diyatalawa beyond survey camp upto ohiya railway station, then along railway line towards Pattipola up to first tunnel and from there climbing hill through thick forest, hanging on trees, creepers, exposed roots and branches. Once the summit of the hill is reached, the widely spread green pasture - the famous Hortan Plains is visible at once, making a feeling that we have reached heaven.
The cool breeze, flowing streams with noise of moving water, strange plants, creepers, flowers and innocent wild beasts and fresh, cool, flowing water available freely to quench thirst keep the tiredness away. Beyond Far Inn Restaurant, the visitors have to follow a rough gravel road around 5 km to reach World’s End. Traversing half way they will come across a junction, which is the starting point of the circular road. If left road is selected, you will first reach Small World’s End, next Large World’s End and last the beautiful Baker’s Falls and from there to the startlng point of circular road through amazing natural landscape. The World’s End was first became popular, subsequent to the death of a young couple, who jumped down from the cliff of the World’s End.According to the Far Inn keeper, the couple had visited the inn, had some refreshment and left for World’s End. The details of the couple or the cause of suicide are not disclosed so far.
